How Many Premier League Titles Does Liverpool Have?

If we want to discuss liverpool premier league titles, we should start with the Football League First Division. The Football League First Division was the precursor to the Premier League, so I think Liverpool’s titles won during that period should also be counted. If we don’t consider the Football League First Division time, then Liverpool fc can only be considered to have won the Premier League once. Manchester United have won the most Premier League titles with 13, followed by Manchester City with eight.

If you include the Football League First Division, Liverpool fc has won the second most Premier League titles. There were total 19 Liverpool Premier League titles. At the top of the list is Manchester United with a total of 20 Premier League titles. So, let’s take a look at the Premier League titles won by Liverpool fc.

Early Championship History

Tom Watson led the club to Liverpool Premier League title in 1900. At that time the Premier League was known as the Football League First Division.

Five years later, Tom Watson again led the club to the 1905/06 Liverpool Premier League title.

David Ashworth and Matt McQueen were credited with winning the 1921/22 and 1922/23 Liverpool Premier League titles.

But, after this, the club fell back into obscurity and had a 24 year wait.

A Mid-career Title Run

Twenty-four years later, the club was revived by the appearance of centre half George Kay. He is a former West Ham United centre back. George Kay led the club to its fifth title in the 1946/47 season.

Unfortunately, in the 1953/54 season the club was relegated to the Second Division. They didn’t rejoin the First Division until 1962. The following year the club returned to the top under Bill Shankly. He led the club win Liverpool Premier League title in the 1963/64 season. And, the club’s second Liverpool Premier League title under Bill Shankly came in the 1972/73 season. Under Shankly, the team rebuilt itself from a second-tier side to one of the elite teams in English football.

The Paisley Era

Shankly retired shortly afterwards. Then, his assistant Bob Paisley took over to lead the club to glory. Under his leadership, Liverpool ushered in an era of domestic and continental dominance, winning six league titles (1975-76, 1976-77, 1978-79, 1979-80, 1981-82 and 1982-83) and three European Cups in just eight seasons.

Paisley’s assistant Joe Fagan took over the club and successfully defended the title in 1983/84 season.

Bob Paisley is arguably the best manager in Liverpool’s history.

Liverpool could have continued their title winning ways. Unfortunately, after the Heysel Stadium disaster, English clubs were banned from European tournaments for five years. Liverpool in turn were banned for ten years.

The Dalglish Era

Being banned from the Europa League didn’t stop Liverpool from continuing to shine in the English Football League. Under Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool won three more Liverpool Premier League titles, a double with the FA Cup in 1985/86, the 1987/88 Premier League title and the 1989/90 Premier League title. This took Liverpool’s tally to a staggering 18 titles.

After this, Liverpool began a three-decade wait.

Thirty-years Waiting

After thirty years of waiting, Liverpool finally returned to the top in 2020. It was the first Liverpool Premier League title it officially won since the Football League First Division was transformed into the Premier League. It was a tough season for all clubs. The Premier League suspended play from 13 March to 17 June due to the epidemic.

Liverpool won their 19th Premier League title on June 25, following Manchester City’s defeat by Chelsea. It accomplished a remarkable accomplishment by winning the league: as the only side to win the title in June, it won the Premier League title earlier than any other team in terms of games played (7 left) yet later than any other team in terms of dates played.

Liverpool broke several additional English premier league records during the season, such as the record for the greatest lead in points (25), and the record for the most home victories in a row (24, seven of which were carried over from the previous campaign). Additionally, they tied the Premier League records for the most victories (32) and the most victories at home (18) in a row.

In Summary

Liverpool has impressed us in the last century. Its achievements and glories were enough to make everyone look up to it. But after the 21st century, it seems that their strengths have not been fully manifested. Perhaps they are waiting for the next Bob Paisley to lead them back to the top.
