Peru managed to leapfrog from the bottom of the table with their first victory in the ninth round of South American qualifying, a 1-0 win over Uruguay. However, their euphoria didn’t last long as they followed that up with a 0-4 defeat in Brazil, still six points behind the playoff spots.
Chile had a disastrous week, suffering five consecutive defeats in the qualifiers. Although they were ahead against Peru, they ended up losing in the last minute in dire circumstances. Chile are currently in a slump in qualifying and desperately needs to regain their form to stand a chance of progressing.
