Paris 2024: Rehab Ahmed and Clara Fuentes Shine with Historic Wins

Rehab Ahmed Finally Secures Paralympic Gold

Rehab Ahmed’s long-awaited victory came on September 5, 2024, at the Paris Paralympics. After securing silver medals in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, Ahmed, the Egyptian powerlifter, clinched gold in the women’s up to 55kg category at La Chapelle Arena. Ahmed made a strong start with a 117kg lift and later improved to 121kg, which was more than enough to win the gold.

Ahmed expressed her joy, stating that this gold medal was the culmination of a dream she had pursued throughout her career. Her past silver medals made this victory even sweeter, marking a significant achievement in her Paralympic journey.

Clara Fuentes and Venezuelan Powerlifting History

Clara Fuentes made history for Venezuela by setting a new Paralympic record in the women’s up to 50kg category. Fuentes, who won a bronze medal in Tokyo 2020, surpassed her previous achievement by lifting 124kg to secure gold at La Chapelle Arena. Her victory was a landmark moment for Venezuelan powerlifting, as she became the first from her country to win a Paralympic gold medal in this sport.

Fuentes was overwhelmed with emotion after her win, feeling both proud and excited. She dedicated her triumph to Venezuela, expressing her satisfaction and happiness.

China and Egypt’s Success in Men’s Events

In the men’s events, China’s Zou Yi captured the gold in the up to 65kg category. Despite a strong performance from Great Britain’s Mark Swan, who finished first in his Paralympic debut with a 213kg lift, Zou Yi took the top spot with a 215kg lift. Zou Yi, who is also a world champion, aimed to break his own world record but fell short.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Elmenyawy of Egypt won the men’s up to 59kg category in his Paralympic debut. This victory added to Egypt’s success at the Games. China’s Qi Yongkai earned the silver medal, and Iran’s Mohsen Bakhtiar took bronze.

Looking Ahead

The Para powerlifting events will continue with finals in several categories, including the men’s up to 72kg, women’s up to 61kg, women’s up to 67kg, and men’s up to 80kg. The competition remains fierce, and fans eagerly anticipate more inspiring performances.
