Community Outraged by Mid-Season Firing of Respected Coach
Karim Jelassi, head coach of the Okemos boys’ tennis team, was unexpectedly fired mid-season, shocking players and parents alike. Jelassi was informed of his dismissal during a meeting with Athletic Director Ken Sinz and an HR representative but was not provided with any reason or prior warnings regarding his performance. His team, currently ranked 10th in Michigan, had strong prospects for the remainder of the season.
Jelassi expressed disappointment over the timing, stating that his sudden dismissal would negatively affect the players and their season. “We have a great team this year, and the kids have worked extremely hard. This decision impacts them the most,” he remarked, pointing out that mid-season changes could disrupt the team’s momentum.
The school district has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of Jelassi’s termination, with Sinz only commenting that José Gutierrez, the previous junior varsity coach and a Spanish teacher at Okemos, would take over the head coaching duties. While Sinz praised Gutierrez’s leadership abilities, many in the community were unhappy with the move.
Parents and players have rallied behind Jelassi, with one parent writing to the school’s principal and board, urging them to reconsider the decision. Additionally, an online petition calling for Jelassi’s reinstatement has garnered significant support from the community, with many signing in solidarity with the coach.
Jelassi remains hopeful that the school administration will review the situation and allow him to return. “I know the kids miss me,” he said. “Parents and players alike believe this decision was unfair, especially at such a crucial time in the season.”
Despite the school district’s silence, the push for Jelassi’s return continues to grow, and the community hopes for a resolution that will see him back on the courts leading his team to a successful season.
