On Wednesday afternoon, University of Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel announced that former players KJ Marshall and Matt Watson have joined the Panthers’ coaching staff as graduate managers. Both Marshall and Watson, 2024 graduates of the university, will take on key roles within the basketball program, assisting in various capacities to aid player and team development.

KJ Marshall played three seasons for Pitt, appearing in 25 games after stints at Mars Hill University and Garden City Community College. Known for his relentless energy and commitment, Marshall made his mark as a valuable reserve throughout his college career. His work ethic and intensity during practice sessions were recognized as instrumental in preparing the scouting team and aiding overall game preparation. In his new role as a graduate manager, Marshall will assist the coaching staff in organizing practice schedules, preparing scouting reports, conducting skill drills, and fostering player development.

Matt Watson, who joined Pitt’s men’s basketball program as a graduate manager in July 2024, previously spent four years as a student manager. His role within the team now expands to cover all logistical aspects of the basketball program.

During the 2023-24 season, Watson served as the liaison between coaches, managers, opposing teams, and university personnel. Additionally, he worked closely with the Director of Basketball Operations to oversee the day-to-day functions of the program. Watson also contributed to data analysis and video breakdown using Synergy Sports and has experience as a student equipment manager, as well as assisting with youth basketball summer camps during his undergraduate years.

Pitt is set to kick off the 2024-25 season on Monday, November 4, with a home opener against Radford University at the Petersen Events Center. Both Marshall and Watson will be key contributors to the program’s ongoing efforts to build a competitive team for the upcoming season.
