Jannik Sinner Claims Cincinnati Crown; Aryna Sabalenka Maintains Winning Form

Jannik Sinner

CINCINNATI — Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked player in men’s tennis, demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill by defeating Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4), 6-2 in the Cincinnati Open final. Despite battling recent health issues, including a hip problem and a bout of tonsillitis that kept him out of the Paris Olympics, Sinner’s victory underscores his readiness for the upcoming US Open.

The 23-year-old Italian started the match showing signs of discomfort, particularly in the first set, where he struggled with a limp after certain points. Nevertheless, Sinner found his rhythm in the tiebreak, successfully absorbing Tiafoe’s powerful serve and taking the set when the American’s shot missed the mark.

Tiafoe, who had struggled with momentum this season, was unable to capitalize on his three break-point opportunities in the first set and fell behind 2-0 in the second. Sinner seized control with a decisive forehand winner and closed out the match with an unreturnable serve. This triumph marks Sinner’s fifth title of the year and his first in Cincinnati, following his breakthrough win at the Australian Open in January.

Sinner’s performance in Ohio is a testament to his ability to compete at a high level even when not fully fit—an asset he will need as he heads into the US Open. With defending champion Novak Djokovic and world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz also in strong form, Sinner’s ability to perform under pressure will be crucial.

“It was a very difficult week, tough week. I’m very happy about today’s match,” Sinner said. “It was very tough mentally. We both felt a lot of tension, but I’m very glad about the level I played, especially in the important moments.”

As he looks ahead to the US Open, Sinner’s primary focus is on recovery and preparation. “Now, for sure, it’s important to recover and be ready for New York,” he added. “I’m very happy to be in a position where I am and just trying to keep going with this hunger to keep playing.”

In the women’s final, Aryna Sabalenka extended her impressive run of form with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Jessica Pegula. Sabalenka’s powerful serve and aggressive style proved too much for Pegula, securing her second title of the year and her sixth WTA 1000 title. This win in Cincinnati comes after her successful campaign at the Australian Open and bolsters her position as a strong contender for the US Open.

Despite the loss, Pegula can take confidence from her strong performance throughout the week. Her run included a notable semifinal victory over Paula Badosa, and she remains a formidable force as she prepares for the US Open.

Both Sinner and Sabalenka have demonstrated their readiness and skill, setting the stage for an exciting and highly anticipated US Open.
