On the sixth day of the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, India achieved a historic milestone by securing its highest-ever medal count at the Paralympics. With 20 medals to their name, India has surpassed their previous best performance of 19 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. This achievement marks a significant moment in India’s Paralympic history, highlighting the nation’s growing prowess in adaptive sports.
Early on Wednesday, Indian athletes continued their strong showing in athletics. Sharad Kumar clinched a silver medal in the men’s high jump T63 category, while Mariyappan Thangavelu earned a bronze in the same event. Both athletes displayed incredible determination, further solidifying India’s standing in the track and field events.
In the F46 javelin throw final, Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar added to India’s medal tally by winning silver and bronze, respectively. Their performances demonstrated the depth of talent in India’s Paralympic athletics squad.
Meanwhile, Deepthi Jeevanji secured a bronze medal in the women’s 400m T20 event, continuing India’s success on the track. Although not all athletes reached the podium, their efforts were commendable. Shooter Avani Lekhara, who previously won gold, finished fifth in the women’s 50m rifle three positions final. In archery, Pooja Jatyan faced tough competition and was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Additionally, India’s flag bearer from the opening ceremony, Bhagyashree Jadhav, narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s shot put F34 final.
India’s performance at the Paris Paralympics has already been a remarkable success, and with several events still to come, the nation is poised to potentially add even more to its medal haul. This unprecedented achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of India’s Paralympic athletes, as they continue to inspire a new generation of sports enthusiasts across the country.
