Despite winning the Super Cup, beating Manchester United 5-4 on penalties, Pep Guardiola is unsure if Manchester City are ready for the Premier League season after a 1-1 draw at Wembley on Saturday.
City will start their title defence this weekend at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea but Pep didn’t learn much from the win over United.
“I’m not sure whether preparation has been done well,” he added “We could have lost today. We were close to losing with 5 minutes to go, so you have to wait. I saw a lot of stuff that I enjoyed. The first 35 minutes were excellent, which was unexpected for the time we’ve been together.”
“We are far from our best. It’s normal, but winning a trophy is better. It’s better, but because we won, nothing has changed.”
Silva and Bobb Shine Amid Concerns
City were seconds from defeat until Bernardo Silva came off the bench to score with a header from close range in the 90th minute to take the game to penalties.
Silva’s goal was set up by a nice move and cross from Oscar Bobb, who was one of the City players who impressed during the pre-season tour in the US.
He impressed during the US tour and will play a lot in the first few weeks of the season as players return from international duty.
“We want more,” he said. “He needs to show more dependability in the final third. Sometimes he gets the ball and goes, but he’s a bit passive. But he has something special.
“The way he got behind the ball, turned, and crossed for the goal is a really impressive move. He has an incredible work rate and is very good at pressing and defending, but he’s still young. Even so, he can do it and he has to do it more.” he summarized.
