The Importance of Time in Football Management
Pep Guardiola has voiced his belief that Enzo Maresca can thrive as Chelsea’s head coach, but he emphasized that success won’t come overnight. Maresca, who previously worked alongside Guardiola at Manchester City, earned his chance at Chelsea after a successful stint guiding Leicester City back to the Premier League. As the two managers prepare to face off on Sunday, Guardiola offered some words of wisdom for his former assistant.
Guardiola was quick to downplay his role in Maresca’s achievements, insisting that the credit belongs entirely to Maresca and his team. Reflecting on the Italian’s success, Guardiola made it clear that it wasn’t his doing, and that any future success at Stamford Bridge would hinge on whether Chelsea allows Maresca the time to build something substantial. The club’s recent history of managerial changes, with four different managers in just two seasons, could be a stumbling block.
“The job that Enzo completed at Leicester belongs to him and his team alone.“ Guardiola stated. “I had no hand in Leicester’s promotion. I didn’t make any saves or score any goals. I provide guidance, they take what they need. Success is a shared effort, but the credit is theirs.”
Guardiola went on, “My advice is straightforward: give him some time, and he’ll figure it out.” Every manager needs time. I’m not sure if Chelsea is the place for that, but if they are patient, it will pay off. That’s what I believe.”
Rodri to Sit Out Sunday’s Match
Guardiola also acknowledged that Manchester City’s squad isn’t at full strength yet, largely due to several players having participated in the later stages of EURO 2024 and Copa America. One notable absence for Sunday’s match will be key midfielder Rodri, who has only recently returned to training after Spain’s EURO victory.
“He’s back in training, but I haven’t seen him much,” Guardiola said of Rodri. “He feels good, but we’ll have to assess after training. But for Sunday, no, he won’t be in the squad.”
Guardiola pointed out that the season is long, and maintaining both physical and mental readiness is crucial. Rest is part of that equation, and City will have to manage with the players available.
The manager also confirmed that promising young winger Oscar Bobb, who impressed during pre-season, is out for “three or four months” due to a leg injury.
Maresca Acknowledges the Challenge Ahead
On the other side, Enzo Maresca admitted that going up against his former boss will be tough, especially since Guardiola has had the time to establish his system at City since 2016.
“Pep isn’t a manager who sticks to one thing,” Maresca said. “We won’t be either. Starting the season against the champions is challenging, but it’s also a chance to prove ourselves.”
He recognized the advantage City has with Guardiola’s long tenure, but Maresca remains optimistic, looking to use every part of Chelsea’s game to deliver a performance that would make both the team and the fans proud.
Gallagher’s Absence and Uncertain Future
Maresca also confirmed that Conor Gallagher would not be featuring in Sunday’s match, amid speculation that the midfielder could be on his way out, possibly to Atletico Madrid.
“He’s working on a solution with the club,” Maresca explained. “During the summer transfer window, these things frequently happen. Every club has its challenges during this time, but in the end, the goal is for everyone to be satisfied. Hopefully, Conor’s situation will be resolved in a way that works for all parties involved.”
