Ederson Shines in Penalty Shootout as Manchester City Defeats Manchester United to Win FA Community Shield

Pep’s City has started the season with a trophy. On Saturday (August 10) they won the FA Community Shield by beating Manchester United 7-6 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

Ederson was the hero of the day, saving Jadon Sancho’s penalty and then scoring one himself. Jonny Evans then scored and City won 7-6.

Garnacho scored for the Red Devils but City equalised in the dying minutes through Bernardo.

Match Highlights and Key Moments

Both teams didn’t play with their full-strength teams.

The first half was not the greatest part. The best moment was when United’s defence was breached and McTominay recovered and crossed. The ball deflected off Evans and hit the post.

On the other side, a great chance was wasted when Diallo and Rashford failed to take it.

The second half was better. 58th minute Bruno Fernandes scored from outside Ederson’s penalty area but was offside.

The 29th minute was a big chance for United. Garnacho went down the right and crossed to Rashford who was completely unmarked but he hit the post.

And it paid off in the 36th minute. Garnacho got the ball again on the right, beat his man, and shot, hit the post. 1-0.

Bernardo celebrates Manchester City's goal in the Super Cup

But Manchester City showed why they are one of the best teams in the world in recent years. They responded. Brazilian debutant Savinho, making his first start for the club, delivered a cross for Bernardo Silva to head in the equaliser in the 43rd minute.

Now attention turns to the Premier League which starts next week. Manchester United are at Old Trafford on Friday (August 16) against Fulham, Manchester City are away at Chelsea on Sunday (August 18).
