Black Myth: Wukong Triumphs, Becomes Steam’s Most-Played Single-Player Game

On August 20, 2024, Game Science’s highly anticipated action role-playing game, Black Myth: Wukong, made its debut on PC and PlayStation 5, with the Xbox Series X/S version in development. According to SteamDB, the game quickly soared to become the second most popular game in Steam’s history, with a peak concurrent player count exceeding 2.2 million within 24 hours.

Black Myth: Wukong has surpassed Palworld to become the second most popular game ever on Steam. As of August 20, the game has achieved a peak concurrent player count of 2,223,179 on Valve’s platform, breaking the previous record of 2,101,867 held by Palworld earlier this year. Whether it can overtake PUBG, which holds the top spot with a peak concurrent player count of 3,257,248, remains to be seen.

Original Story:

Since its release on Steam, Black Myth: Wukong has outperformed Cyberpunk 2077, becoming the most-played single-player game ever on Valve’s platform. The action RPG, developed by China’s Game Science, launched early this morning and quickly climbed to the top of Steam’s popularity charts, reaching a peak concurrent player count of 1,443,570. As the workweek transitions into the weekend, the number of players purchasing the game is expected to rise further.

In less than 24 hours, Black Myth: Wukong has set the fourth-highest concurrent player record in Steam history, trailing only behind PUBG (3,257,248), Palworld (2,101,867), and Valve’s own Counter-Strike 2 (1,818,773). It has surpassed other major titles such as Dota 2, Elden Ring, and Baldur’s Gate 3. The game currently has nearly 30,000 user reviews on Steam, with a rating of “Very Positive.”

According to data from Simon Carless, founder of GameDiscoverCo, a significant portion of the game’s PC player base, 88.1%, is from China, followed by players from the United States, Hong Kong, Canada, and other regions. The game is developed using Unreal Engine 5 and draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.

While Black Myth: Wukong has been praised for its engaging combat mechanics and stunning visuals, it has also faced criticism for technical issues. Game Science acknowledges these challenges and recognizes that the scale of the game and the diversity of hardware configurations may lead to difficulties. The company has expressed regret to fans but promises to effectively manage any issues through its data storage and processing protocols.
