If you caught Vincent Kompany’s first Bundesliga game in charge of Bayern Munich, you’d have seen a dramatic show of resilience as Bayern turned around a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 against VfL Wolfsburg.
The game at the Volkswagen Arena got off to an intense start, thanks in part to some early hype around Kompany’s new role. Bayern Munich, fresh off a dominant 4-0 win over Ulm in the DFB Cup, were eager to make their mark in the league. From the get-go, they seemed to be in control, with Serge Gnabry putting the new Wolfsburg keeper Kamil Grabara to the test multiple times.
Even though Grabara managed to keep out Joshua Kimmich and Harry Kane, he couldn’t stop Jamal Musiala from scoring the opener. Musiala tapped in a simple finish after Sacha Boey made a great run down the right flank. Wolfsburg struggled to make much of an impact before halftime, though they nearly capitalized on some risky plays by Bayern.
But things took a turn right after the break. Wolfsburg’s Tiago Tomás was brought down in the box by Boey, leading to a penalty that Lovro Majer converted confidently. Majer almost scored again soon after but hit the post. He didn’t have to wait long for his second goal, though, as he finished off a cross from Patrick Wimmer to put Wolfsburg ahead 2-1.
Bayern wasn’t going to back down easily. They pushed hard and were rewarded when Jakub Kamiński accidentally scored an own goal after a flick by Kane. Then, Kane turned provider again, assisting Gnabry for the winner. Despite some late pressure from Wolfsburg and a solid save by Manuel Neuer, Bayern held on for the win.
It’s worth noting that Wolfsburg now has a string of defeats, and this was their third loss in a row. Bayern, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten streak against Wolfsburg to 19 games, with 17 of those being victories. Thomas Müller also made history by surpassing Sepp Maier’s record for the most Bundesliga appearances by a Bayern player, adding a bit more shine to an already impressive win.
This game was a rollercoaster, showcasing both the excitement of the Bundesliga and the resilience that Bayern Munich brings to the table. If you’re a fan of dramatic comebacks and thrilling football, this match was certainly one for the books.
