August 7 Highlights: Record-Breaking Feats and Dramatic Wins Energize Olympic Spirit

The games on August 7 brought a rich experience to the spectators’ day. In these competitions, we could see the athletes’ perseverance not to give up, hard work, and unity. These spirits continued to touch us on August 7.

Track and Fields

Men's 400-meter run

Men’s 400-meter run

In a thrilling finish, American Quincy Hall passed Great Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith in the last meters, outpacing the Team GB runner to the finish line by 04 seconds. Muzala Samukonga of Zambia took home bronze.

Men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase

After leading much of the last lap, Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali surged ahead to win the event.

Men’s discus

In the discus throw, record after record was shattered. Initially, Mykolas Alekna from Team Lithuania shattered his father’s Olympic record. It was thrown 69.97 meters. His father, Virgilijus Alekna, had a throw of 69.89 in Athens 20 years prior, thus that throw is better. Shortly after, Rojé Ston of Jamaica broke the record with a 70-meter throw, which was sufficient to win gold in a stunning upset.

Women’s pole vault

After Katie Moon failed twice to pass 4.95 meters, Australia’s Nina Kennedy emerged victorious.

Other events

Basketball

To get to the semifinals, the USA women’s basketball team easily defeated Nigeria. 88-74 was their victory. A’ja Wilson, the two-time MVP, had a fantastic night scoring a game-high 20 points, pulling down 11 rebounds, and dishing out two blocks.

Volleyball

Following a wild five games filled with incredible back-and-forth action, Poland’s men’s volleyball team is headed to the gold medal match for the first time since 1976. The US was vanquished by them. Poland will take on the victor of the semifinal match between France and Italy.

Sailing

After winning the gold in the women’s dinghy on Wednesday, Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands became the most successful female Olympian in sailing. Matt Wearn of Australia, meanwhile, held onto his Olympic gold medal in men’s dinghy sailing. The weather forced the first abandonment of the men’s dinghy race halfway through.

Weightlifting

Li Fabin of China set a new Olympic record and triumphantly defended his 61kg men’s title.

Skateboarding

Keegan Palmer of Australia won the men’s park skateboarding championship with ease. By the time he competed in his final run as the last skater, he had already secured the gold medal.

Swimming for art

Team USA was overjoyed with their achievement, placing them momentarily in the gold medal position with a score of 271.3166. China, however, captured gold after the USA with a trickier routine. USA achieved a silver finish.Third place went to Spain.
