Arsenal has finalized the acquisition of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, with the deal potentially reaching £31.6 million. The 28-year-old Merino has signed a four-year contract with the Gunners, which includes an option for an additional year. The transfer fee consists of an initial £27.4 million, with an extra £4.2 million in performance-related add-ons.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his enthusiasm for the new signing, stating, “Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility.” Merino’s addition marks Arsenal’s third major signing of the transfer window. The club has previously secured Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spain goalkeeper David Raya, the latter of whom was brought on permanently from Brentford after a successful loan spell.
Merino’s recent success with Spain adds to the excitement surrounding his move to the Premier League. The midfielder was instrumental in Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024, participating in all seven matches and scoring a crucial late winner in extra time against Germany during the quarter-finals. His performances throughout the tournament were pivotal in securing the championship for Spain, underscoring his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.
Arteta praised Merino’s technical skills and strong character, emphasizing how he will strengthen the squad: “Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality. As we all saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his strong performances throughout the Euros helping Spain win the tournament.”
Merino, known for his versatility in midfield roles, is expected to complement Declan Rice, who played a box-to-box role at times last season. His arrival provides Arteta with additional options in the midfield, competing with existing players such as Rice, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard.
The Spaniard is not new to the Premier League; he previously spent a year at Newcastle United before moving to Real Sociedad in 2018. During his time at Sociedad, he played alongside Odegaard when the Norwegian was on loan from Real Madrid. Last season, Merino made 45 appearances for Real Sociedad across all competitions, scoring eight goals and showcasing his significant contributions on the field.
With Merino’s experience and proven track record, Arsenal fans can look forward to an exciting new chapter as the team continues to strengthen its squad for the upcoming season.
