Yalemzerf Yehualaw won the TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2024, finishing in a fast time of 2:16:52. This win set a new course record for the race.
In the Amsterdam Marathon 2024 men’s race, Tsegaye Getachew also brought home a victory for Ethiopia, winning in 2:05:38. He finished just ahead of his teammate Boki Asefa.
Yehualaw, who won in London two years ago, wanted to do better after coming in eighth in London earlier this year. The 25-year-old started strong, running the first 10km in 32:23. Then, She pulled away from her last challenger, Desi Jisa from Bahrain, reaching halfway in 1:08:00.
Jisa held second place at halfway with a time of 1:08:14, leading the next runners, Haven Hailu, Winfridah Moseti, and Bedatu Hirpa, by 30 seconds. But the three runners caught Jisa at 25km, with a time of 1:21:15.
At this point, Yehualaw was almost a minute ahead and kept a strong pace. She reached 30km in 1:36:23, leading Hailu and Moseti by 63 seconds.
Yehualaw finished with a time of 2:16:52, breaking the old record set by Almaz Ayana by 28 seconds. Hailu finished second in 2:19:29, and Moseti took third place in 2:20:27, just three seconds ahead of Gladys Chesir from Kenya.
In the men’s race, while the course record was safe, the competition was fierce. A group of 15 runners ran the first 10km in 29:27, with 14 still together at halfway in 1:02:31.
Getachew, the 2022 winner, was among the leaders with Asefa, world silver medallist Maru Teferi from Israel, and Kenyan runners Justus Kangogo, Kennedy Kimutai, and Felix Kipkoech.
As the race continued in the Amsterdam Marathon 2024, the group started to split. Getachew, Asefa, and Teferi entered Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium close to each other.
Similarly to two years ago at the Amsterdam Marathon 2024, Getachew won again with a time of 2:05:38. Asefa followed closely behind in 2:05:40, just two seconds ahead of Teferi.
