2024 MLS Playoff Race Heats Up: Inter Miami Leads the Charge, LA Galaxy and Columbus Crew Shine

The 2024 MLS season has been nothing short of thrilling, with teams battling it out for playoff spots as we head into the final stretch. There’s a clear pecking order at the top of both the Eastern and Western Conferences, but beyond that, the race for playoff qualification is wide open.

Inter Miami made headlines by securing their playoff spot first this season, proving their dominance. With just eight matchdays remaining, the question is, who will be next to join them in the postseason?

The reigning MLS Cup champions, Columbus Crew, are riding high after their recent Leagues Cup victory over LAFC. It was a match that had fans on the edge of their seats, solidifying the Crew’s position as a team to watch. On the other hand, Real Salt Lake had a rough weekend, suffering a tough loss to the San Jose Earthquakes, leaving their playoff hopes in a bit of turmoil.

FC Cincinnati, the 2023 Supporters’ Shield winners, continue to impress, maintaining their momentum from last season. However, it’s not just the usual suspects making waves. Teams like LA Galaxy, Colorado Rapids, New York Red Bulls, and the returning Seattle Sounders are all creeping up the standings, adding even more excitement to the playoff race.

With 26 matchdays behind us, it’s clear which teams are leading the pack and which are struggling to meet expectations. Inter Miami, even without Lionel Messi—who’s out with an ankle injury from Copa America—has managed to stay on top, thanks to Luis Suarez’s outstanding performance. His brace against FC Cincinnati was a reminder of his quality and Miami’s strength.

Meanwhile, LA Galaxy delivered a standout performance, defeating Atlanta United 2-0. Marco Reus made a memorable debut, coming off the bench to score and assist, helping Galaxy stay five points clear at the top of the Western Conference, despite LAFC having games in hand.

Columbus Crew continues to shine, having added another trophy to their collection with the Leagues Cup win. Wilfried Nancy has guided them to three Cup Finals in just eight months, making them one of the most formidable teams this season.

LAFC, though disappointed by their Leagues Cup loss, are already gearing up for the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, where they’ll face the Seattle Sounders. They’ll be back in MLS action soon, aiming to regain their momentum.

Lastly, the New York Red Bulls had a lackluster 1-1 draw with Charlotte FC, but they remain solidly in fourth place in the East, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
